With the updated maps, 8,400 property owners learned that they are now in high-risk zones and required by lenders to buy flood insurance. After initial low rates, insurance backed by the federal National Flood Insurance Program has now jumped to as much as $1,200 a year. Due to this increase, angry residents have pressured elected officials for aid.
Last week, the House of Representatives passed a new National Flood Insurance Program, requiring lenders to accept flood insurance issued by private insurers instead of government flood insurance policies. The Senate is expected to take up the bill this year because the National Flood Insurance Program expires in September.
If the provision stays in and becomes law, local officials say premiums from private insurers should be lower than those offered under the national program. "It'll be a great benefit," said Visalia Council Member Steve Nelsen, who won election on a platform of fighting the flood maps. "We'd see a tremendous relief in the cost of insurance premiums."
